The burn of Coleâs hands lingered on my hips; my thighs aching as I bent over and grabbed the discarded spoon from the floor. I liked how he watched me, how his eyes slowly undressed me again. I wondered if this was how weâd greet each other every night we had off together.
I certainly hoped.
My lips pulled into a sideways smile.
I dropped the dirty spoon into the sink and grabbed another from the drawer. From the corner of my eye, I caught Cole wincing as he looked at the giant cluster of disaster that had once been his apartment.
âI was hoping we could get most of this put away after dinner,â I said as I stirred the chicken soup.
Cole slipped his hands around my waist from behind, kissing my shoulder, and then my neck. He hummed as he inhaled, and his warm breath sent goosebumps skating over the entire surface of my body.
âThis place is a fucking mess,â he said, and I laughed as he pulled away, turning me to face him. His brows dipped into V, his eyes filled with a deep panic, and for a minute, he just stared at me. Coleâs pupils dilated as his gaze fell to my mouth and said, âI had this big ideaâ¦â His tone was gentle as if he was talking out loud to himself, his eyes still fixed on my mouth. ââ¦but as always, when it comes to you, nothing ever goes how Iâve imagined it⦠how Iâve planned it.â
He raised his brown eyes to mine, and my stomach flipped. I moved into his apartment⦠I was living with Cole, it was a huge step, and instead of making the transition easier on him, Iâd destroyed the one place he was able to have the order he needed.
Shit Baileyâ¦
âIâm sorry.â My throat felt smaller somehow. Part of me was a little angry that the boxes had him looking at me like he was drowning. But then another part of me â the part that loved this man regardless of his need to have every last thing organized, including his ties and bed linen in color coordination â wanted to smooth it over, and I brought my lips to his.
His kiss was light, and as he pulled away, he placed his thumb on my chin as he asked, âWhy are you sorry?â Again the crease between his brows deepened.
âThis is a big day, and like you said, you probably didnât plan to come home to such a mess. I move in andââ
âWait, thatâs not what I meant.â He framed my face with his hands. âIâm screwing this up.â He shook his head and swallowed as the panic returned to his eyes.
My heart sank into my stomach, maybe he wasnât ready for this, and maybe Iâd pushed him too hard. Last month Iâd hinted about wanting to move in, Iâd stayed here every night since weâd gotten back together six months ago, and it was ridiculous to pay for an apartment I never used anymore.
